Why Am I Not Fertile?
Why Am I Not Fertile?
The journey to motherhood is overwhelming and frustrating. Many women struggle with unexplained infertility, feeling as though their bodies are betraying them and leaving them going to bed at night, doom scrolling, asking "Why am I not fertile?".
The constant pressure to conceive, coupled with the demands of everyday life, can lead to chronic stress and health issues that drain your energy and resources, leaving you feeling like you’ve lost control of your own fertility. Before you even start with the additional pressure of trying to conceive adding to that everyday load. Because trying to figure it out yourself feels like a 2nd full time job.
And I don't think that's right.
I know what it's like longing for a child, only to be met with disappointment month after month. As your body battles inflammation, stress, and gut issues, you feel like the very essence of your fertility is slipping away. It's soooo disheartening to think that while you’re doing everything “right,” your body might still be in survival mode, prioritising your immediate health over creating new life. Each cycle that passes without success amplifies the anxiety and despair, leading to a vicious cycle that feels impossible to escape.
Read on, I highlighted everything for a reason....because if you're asking Why am I not fertile? Understanding the root causes is mandatory. And they may not be what you think.
Natural fertility support
Building your body's resources for pregnancy isn't just about going for tests and seeing the results on a piece of paper. Regardless of whether they say you have endo, PCOS, or unexplained (which is a cop out in my book, cos your body doesn't just decide not to work in the most basic way we're programmed to - there's a reason....).
But anyways, natural fertility support is just that. It supports your body where it's lacking. Note I say, where it's lacking, cos it isn't about doing everything. Your body may not need everything and by doing so, you're loading more pressure and strain onto a system that is already telling you it's overworked. If it wasn't, you'd have enough resource to grow your much wanted child.
Improve fertility naturally
So, you may be looking for natural ways to enhance fertility before IVF (even with Low AMH etc) or you could instead just be looking at creating an optimal environment for pregnancy naturally. Either is fine. The root cause is still important whichever juncture you're choosing. Let's look at each independently for ease.
IVF alternatives and improving the success of IVF outcomes
When you think about how to improve fertility naturally alongside IVF, where does your mind immediately go? Supplements, nutrition? Yoga? Or do you just think, it's fine, I'm going for IVF now, so the pressure is off and I just need to take my meds and arrive on time for my scans? No judgement here btw, but think about it like this for a second...
Think about IVF as a room in your house. If your nursery is decorated beautifully, but the rest of the house is ramshackle, has no heating to keep your baby warm, no hot water to wash him or her, and the electricity cables is all live wires poking out for sticky fingers to find, would you think that's the best environment for your baby to come home to?
Now, think about your IVF, they're effectively creating a baby out of your body, putting a and b together. And then they're implanting it into you - your body. And that's the house that your unborn child will not only live in, but will use the resources from to grow and develop into a healthy human being.
So now I ask you again, would you put your baby into that ramshackle house?
This is essentially the link between health and fertility success.
Bandwidth for pregnancy
This is all about making sure the whole of your house is working optimally. Because when it is, when the lights aren't flickering and the tap is running hot water, and your baby is living in a nurturing environment it can thrive.
Our bodies have a finite bandwidth, just like a battery. So if we use too much of that energy sending plumbers out every day to deal with the blocked drain, and electricians to fix a wire that just comes loose again so needs fixing again tomorrow, you can see how that resource can deplete. And if you have less spare resource available because your body is busy running plumbers and electricians, then how can your body grow a child - the energy that would be diverted into growing new life, is busy being used on sustaining you - the host. And our most basic human instinct is to stay alive. So your body doesn't grow new life when it's struggling with this one.
So when we improve our fertility bandwidth, we fix the plumbing and the water cos those bills are unnecessary. So by sorting them out once and for all, not only do you feel great, but your body gets this wasted energy back. And piece by piece the reserve builds enough so that our system has enough left over for new life.
Infertility solutions
Now there's a tonne of infertility solutions out there, natural and a lot that are over the counter, expensive add ons that I'm sure you've been tempted by. It happens. But what if I told you, it's not always more that you need, it's often less. Let's investigate by taking a few of the common topics that I hear about day in day out from the ladies who come to work with me.
Fertility and gut health
Your gut processes the nutrients that we put in our body. So of course, gut issues that affect fertility in women has a part to play. However, say you've seen a supplement and it sounds amazing, so you think, why not, I don't know why I'm not fertile, so I'll just go ahead and purchase it, what harm can it do?
Well, if your body doesn't need that, what happens to it. Your body eradicates it, right? Yep. And what does that take? Energy...
And what do we need enough of to grow a baby? Energy.
So is it really not doing any harm to just throw everything at this and hope that something sticks?
Stress and fertility
When we think about the impact of stress on fertility and pregnancy, do you think about running around like a headless chicken without a minute to breathe? I mean, of course, that's part of it. And if we get back to how much energy that uses, it's a lot more than we need to, for instance, if you ran a 100m or walked it, how much faster would your heart be beating?
So yes, stress and fertility are interconnected.
But there's also a tonne of other stress out there. The video below will help to explain this. It's from a free webinar I did for some ladies a few years ago.
Inflammation and pregnancy
If you watched that last video, you'll already understand how inflammation and pregnancy go together. But now going another level deep briefly, inflammation effectively closes the holes that our cells take nutrients in through. So without those holes being open, tying this back to our earlier examples, even if we need the supplements that you're taking, if the holes are closed, then those nutrients get spat out again by the body. And what does that do? It leaves you more depleted because your body now is not only lacking the nutrients but it's also working harder than it was before you put these supplements in your body to get them out again.
So now, hopefully you can see what is fertility bandwidth and why it matters in answering the question of 'Why am I not fertile?' because our bodies are interconnected systems, like a spider's web where one pull at A triggers a movement in the centre of the web = B but also the other side where it connects interdependently to the wall at Z. It's never as simple as looking at one piece such as how inflammation affects fertility and conception, without understanding how your spider's web is built.
